BILL EVANS AT NDEO
PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP
Washington, D.C.
October 6 & 7, 2016
On Thursday, October 6, Mr. Evans will conduct his annual pre-conference workshop, Passing on the Legacy. This year’s workshop title is: Creation and Performance for Teachers and Their Students. He will be assisted by his friend, colleague, Evans-certified teacher and former student, Clarence Brooks, associate professor of dance at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. Dr. Suzanne Knosp, professor of director of music for dance at the University of Arizona, is tentatively planning on creating a new musical score for this piece, which she will perform live. This full-day workshop will give teachers and one or two of the current or former students—who must register as a team, one teacher and one or two of her/his students—an opportunity to participate in the creation and performance of a movement . The workshop will delve into the rich yet multi-layered relationship between student and teacher, mentor and mentee. By exploring the nature of this relationship in its physical embodiment, Evans and Brooks plan to foster an atmosphere that encourages a cross-generational approach to the creative process and the inherent collaborative nature of dance making.

Each duo or trio will create a short movement sequence that is reflective of their exploration and process. Evans will lead the creation of a movement collage integrating these studies, and he and Brooks will coach and refine the resulting collage and prepare it for a performance as a Passing on The Legacy event for the entire conference and the opening gathering on Friday, October 7. All ages and dance styles are welcome! Participants from private studios, K-12 schools, conservatories and higher education are all encouraged to join!

On Friday, October 7, 11:30 to 12:30, Bill Evans will also present a movement session: Social Construction of Knowledge in the Dance Technique Class.
